Astrofest Visnjan - Shortest Night Celebration Croatia 2012Croatia has an observatory that achieves superior results in the number of discovered asteroids every year. This is the Visnjan Observatory, which is very well known among astronomers from all over the world who are dealing with the detection and monitoring of such celestial bodies.
It was established by the decision of the Assembly of Amateur Astronomical Society Višnjan, on 13.XI.1992. but its begining reaches back in 1970, encouraged by achievements of astronautics.
On the day of summer solstices, June 21st, astronomy enthusiasts gather at the hill near the famous Višnjan observatory. That day, known for the shortest night of the year, is celebrated in a special way.
By many oral traditions, it is linked to numerous mystical beliefs. There is all-night music-drama program, which begins with seeing off last evening sunlight. It ends in the morning with the first rays of sun and hypnotic rhythms of drums. Astrofest is a unique event that attracts great attention of sky, stars and spiritual New Age music lovers.
