Split is a city & port in Central Dalmatia. It is the capital of Dalmatia, and the second largest city in Croatia with road and sea connections to Dalmatia's numerous tourist resorts. It has a Mediterranean climate and as well as being the business, administrative and cultural centre of central Dalmatia, is a popular tourist destination. Split has 1700 years of history and many archaeological, historical and cultural monuments including the Palace of Diocletian which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It has a variety of good restaurants and bars and cafes on almost every street. There are many beaches in the vicinity including the popular Bacvice beach, a sandy beach practically in the centre of Split. Split has good transport links with the rest of Croatia and other resorts on the Dalmatian coast. Ferries operate to other ports on the coast from Split as well as to the central Dalamatian islands and Ancona in Italy. The Airport of Split is situated in Resnik (Kastela).Split has 4 marinas the main Split ACI Marina has 500 sea berths and a further 100 on land.
In a Split-Dalmatia county there are noumerous smaller towns and villages worth of visiting such as:Trogir situated 27 km west of Split,Makarska located 60 km southeast of Split.
Visit: Palace of Diocletian, the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments, the Treasury of the Split Cathedral, the Museum of Marine History, the Ethnographic Museum, Museum of Natural Science, The Art Gallery. The Marjan Forest Park, with its promendades, solariums, nature paths, play areas and Split zoo and with views over the city.
Events: Split Summer (plays, opera and concerts), Split Saturday Nights (classical music concerts), the Art Summer (folklore shows), feast day of Radunica and many pop concerts throughout Summer. Other events include Days of Marulic (April), Book of the Mediterranean (October), Day of St Doimus (patron saint of city - 7th May)
