Description:
Highways in Croatia (croatian autoceste; singular: autocesta) are the main national road network in Croatia, consisting of high-speed highways. The default national speed limit (which is effective where no other speed limits are present) is 130 kilometres per hour (81 mph). A highway is defined in Croatia as a road with at least three lanes in each direction (including hard shoulder), speed limit of not less than 80 kilometres per hour (50 mph) and marked with a special road sign. The road sign depicting a highway is similar to the Swiss road sign depicting an autoroute.
Highways are named A (autocesta) accompanied by one or two digits, while expressways operate on a similar scheme, but with letter B (brza cesta). State routes are named D (državna cesta) with one to three digits, while county routes always have the letter Ž (županijska cesta) and four digits. The lowest designation are local roads, marked with letter L (lokalna cesta) and five digits.
