Description:
The European Commission (EC) nominated the Croatian capital. It was one of 2,100 cities that had applied for the nomination, according to "Hina" news agency. The other two european nominees are Budapest and Alameda in Portugal. The winner will be announced on 23 February.
Zagreb Coordinator for European Mobility Week Marinka Bakula-Andelic said the nomination meant a lot to Zagreb because the criteria had been very strict. The week occurred in September 2008.
Bakula-Andelic said: "Our biggest advantage was our public transport, which we had to prove was ecologically-friendly, fast, cheap and practical. It was hard to demonstrate to the jury our trams were beautiful as well as functional."
Zagreb also needed to show all new public transport vehicles were fully accessible and streets and crossings had been fully adapted for use by people with disabilities, she said.
