What first comes to your mind when someone mentions Croatia? For most people, it’s the city of Dubrovnik! Recently, Dubrovnik was chosen as the second most popular destination among Facebook users and The New York Times suggests it as one of the places worth visiting in 2012.

This charming Croatian city, often referred to as the Adriatic pearl, certainly deserves this high level of popularity for its remarkable beauty and rich and exciting history. This city has it all, beautiful beaches and clear blue sea, superb restaurants and accommodation, cultural sites, entertainment and nice weather most of the year.

Spectacular Cable Car Views &  Panorama Restaurant!

One lesser known area of the city is above eye level! When in Dubrovnik, look up and you will see Srdj hill which offers the best view of the old town, and the islands in its vicinity. You can now take a ride on the newly installed cable car that goes up to the top of hill (costing 50 kuna or about £5). As the weather in Dubrovnik is mostly sunny, this is possible any time of the year. You can photograph the stunning picture-postcard views and have a drink, or meal at the new restaurant there, enjoying this breathtaking view that stretches up to 37 miles!

The cable car always used to be a feature of Dubrovnik. It was built back in 1969 and was the first and the only cable car in the Adriatic. After being completely destroyed in the war, it was reinstalled last year, on the opening day of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Since then, it has been a unique tourist attraction on the Adriatic coast.

Accommodation & Events see increase due to new Cable Car & Amphitheatre

The cable car has certainly opened up the area on top of the hill and made it more accessible. This area is already popular for villa guests being only 10 minutes drive from the Old Town and the beaches of Mlini. But the cable car has added a great restaurant with fabulous views, and a short cut to the old town, without the need to drive or park...

Villa Belvedere and Villa Bosanka for example, are both situated above the city, near to the cable car, and are great accommodation choices. You can have all the peace you want in the heart of the Dubrovnik Riviera but also get to the old town easily and quickly. Just 25 minutes from the airport, these two large villas make very good bases.

Something to celebrate? There is an amphitheater on Srdj that can accommodate up to 120 guests and is available for rent for special occasions or events. This location will leave your guests breathless, whether you organize a wedding or a business lunch. Weddings are already on the up as birdes and wedding guests make the most of these fantastic locations.

So what is it like to travel on the Cable Car? A recent guest at Villa Belvedere was delighted with her Cable Car exerience...'

'Using the cable car was a highlight of my visit to Dubrovnik, as it gave me a different perspective and I could see and photograph the stunning picture-postcard views. The restaurant serves great food, and the cable car ride is an adventure in itself - highly recommended!'

She gave us the following account!

'The bright orange cable cars (all public transport in Dubrovnik is orange) traverse the hillside smoothly and elegantly. I watched them and took in the breath-taking views while eating a delicious octopus salad at the Panorama Restaurant located at the cable car station!  An enormous Croatian flag waved lazily in the gentle breeze above our heads.

Lunch over, I bought my one way ticket to the Old City.  It was a while until the next cable car was due to depart so I browsed the gift shop and sunned myself on the top terrace of the cable car building.  Accompanied by an operator in an (orange!) boiler suit, myself and an American family entered the cable car.  The cars can hold up to 30 people, so we had plenty of space.

In just four smooth minutes the cable car had descended the hill and deposited us at the lower cable car station. As we glided over Dubrovnik it was fascinating to look down on the red rooftops and into people's gardens. After a short walk from the cable car station I was at the Pila Gate to the Old City, where I purchased my ticket to walk the city walls.

Dubrovnik is now eve more easier to reach as Easy Jet introduces new lines from London, a total of ten flights a week!
