Croatian restaurant owners reject idea of lower prices

15 February 2009

Description:

Croatian restaurant proprietors have rejected Minister of the Sea, Transport and Development Minister Bozidar Kalmeta's suggestion for lower prices in the upcoming tourist season.
Minister Kalmeta explained his statement to the daily "Slobodna Dalmacija."
He said: "It is perfectly clear we do not know what to expect from the upcoming tourist season, but, even if Croatia will be visited by the same number of tourists, they will spend less money because of the recession.
"I don't think Croatia should reduce its accommodation prices, but restaurant proprietors should think about offering tourists meals that cost less. Otherwise, we will simply have empty restaurants, and everybody will lose," he said.
People employed in the tourism and gastronomy industries said they cannot reduce their prices because they are dependant on suppliers who do not plan to reduce their prices.
