Description:
Twenty Croats are among 200,000 people competing for the job of caretaker on Hamilton Island in Australia.Queensland Tourism is looking for a caretaker and is willing to pay 150,000 Australian dollars a year to a person willing to work for 12 hours a day six months a year, according to the daily "Vecernji list." Hamilton Island, one of the 74 Whitsunday Islands, is located near the Great Barrier Reef.
The caretaker's duties will include feeding turtles, watching whales, picking up the island's post and making weekly online blog, photo-diary and video updates.
The twenty Croats are willing to leave their jobs, families and friends for six months in return for the "the best job in the world." The caretaker will reside in a three-million-dollar villa with a swimming pool, jet skis, a yacht, and a power boat.
Artist Ivan Koprivcevic, 39, from Bjelovar said when he first heard about the job he thought it was a joke but soon thereafter sent in his application.
He said: "I just love to swim and to dive, and the flora and fauna at the Great Barrier Reef are fascinating."
Another Croatian applicant, Sandra Tomljenovic, 30, has a steady job but is ready to quit in order to become caretaker on Hamilton Island. She graduated in biology and works in a lab.
She said: "I love animals. I would leave my job the minute I heard I had gotten the job on Hamilton Island."
Although the 20 Croats are aware competition will be very stiff, they still believe one of them may be lucky.
The person selected will start working as caretaker on 1 July.
