The Croatian Post and Electronic Communications Agency said on 24.02.2009.that 488,210 connections had been made through fixed networks and 135,132 through mobile networks, altogether amounting to 14.05 per cent of all internet connections. The Croatian government adopted a broadband strategy on 13 October 2006 with the goal of reducing the gap between Croatia and the European Union.
The government set the goal of raising broadband connections to 12 per cent of all connections, or 500,000, by the end of 2008. That number was reached months before the deadline.
In comparison, the number of broadband connections in Croatia at the end of 2003 was around 4,400, or 0.1 per cent of all connections.
Croatia leads Southeastern Europe in broadband connections, which constitute 8.71 per cent of all internet connections. At the same time, Croatia is still below the EU average of 20 per cent.
Nonetheless, Croatia is doing better than countries such as Bulgaria and Poland and is roughly comparable to Slovakia, Greece and Romania.
