Croatian astrophysicist Mario Juric is one of 17 winners of a "Hubble Fellowship 2009."The Hubble Fellowship Program provides an opportunity for highly-qualified post-doctoral scientists to conduct independent research broadly related to NASA's Cosmic Origins scientific goals.
Jon Morse, director of the Astrophysics Division in NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington said: "The new fellows are among the best and brightest young astronomers in the world."
The fellowship is for a three-year period during which fellows will receive around 60,500 dollars annually and an extra 16,000 dollars for travel, the daily "Jutarnji list" has reported.
Juric, 30, received a fellowship for research into the origins of galaxies, stars, and planetary systems.
The Zagreb-born astrophysics student has been a prolific discoverer of asteroids and has also discovered one comet, the 183P/Korlevic-Juric, with Korado Korlevic.
Juric also took part in discovery of the Sloan Great Wall, the largest known structure in the universe.
Juric is in a post-doctoral program at Princeton University in the USA.
