Description:
Split Mayor Ivan Kuret and prominent Split officials and individuals approved an initiative to make the city a candidate for European capital of culture in 2020,during the last week. They agreed to name a committee that would be responsible for drafting an application as a first step and agreed committee members would need to meet with representatives of cities that had already applied for the honour or had been chosen as European capitals of culture.
The European Capital of Culture is a city chosen by the European Union to showcase its cultural life and development for one year.
European cities use the City of Culture year to transform their cultural base. Liverpool was European Capital of Culture in 2008, and Linz and Vilnius are the capitals this year.
Although 2020 seems to a long time off, Split must have everything ready to make an official application by 2014.
Kuret said he was confident Split would be the European capital of culture in 2020, but he added the city needed to prepare itself for that.
Although Kuret believes Split has a great chance, Split academic Nenad Cambi warned it would not be so easy because Split needed to resolve many problems such as lack of accommodations.
