Description:
The outlook for the 2009 tourism season in Croatia is rather poor.Booking are down for April and May and also for the summer, according to the daily "Slobodna Dalmacija."
Experts say that anyone who said the tourism season would be problem-free either didn't know or didn't care what he was talking about.
The newspaper said hotels had bookings for only a third of their rooms during the summer high season.
On the other hand, the newspaper added, home owners who rented rooms to tourists would probably have more business this summer.
Croatian tourism specialist ID Riva Tours said bookings on the Adriatic coast are down by 13 per cent.
ID Riva Tours head Selimir Ognjenovic said it would be necessary to convince each guest that Croatia was his best summer destination for a holiday.
Croatian hotel owners are claiming lower prices will not increase their bookings because even the cheapest hotels have fewer bookings.
The travel agency TUI Center says bookings are higher at destinations to which tourists can travel by car.
Hotels in traditionally more-expensive Dubrovnik are reporting fewer bookings so far this year.
