Description:
The new Natural History Museum opened in the centre of Dubrovnik on Tuesday. The city has invested seven million kunas or 938,000 Euros for its construction and for the protection and preservation of its exhibits.
A bust of museum founder Antun Drobac by sculptor Ivan Rendic is above the museum's entrance.
The museum first opened in Dubrovnik in 1872. Since then, the natural history collection has been moved several times and was evacuated during the Croatian Homeland War (1991-1995).
One part of the collection was destroyed during the moves, but the rest has great significance for Croatia because it is rare and dates from the end of the 19th century.
In 2003, the collection was returned from the Zagreb Natural History Museum to Dubrovnik.
In that same year, work on the new museum began.
