Croatia will join Slovenia in opening supermarkets for low-income people. The Slovene stores for people with monthly incomes below 500 Euros offer 70 per cent discounts on groceries.
Alan Jurakovic, the head of the non-profit organisation "SOS Zadruga" (SOS community ), initiated supermarkets for the poor in Slovenia and announced one would open in Zagreb by Christmas, the daily "Vecernji list" has reported.
Although city government officials said they did not know anything about that, Jurakovic said he would visit them soon to arrange for the project. He wants the city to provide a location for the supermarket.
SOS Zadruga is also planning to open supermarkets for the poor in Cakovec and Koprivnica.
Koprivnica Open Public University head Josip Nakic Alfirevic has confirmed his organisation is working on the project with SOS Zadruga.
Jurakovic said prices in the Croatian supermarkets would be in line with low-income people's purses.
One of the reasons food in supermarkets for the poor is so cheap is that its shelf-life has almost expired. Big supermarkets usually throw such food out but sometimes donate it to supermarkets for the poor.
