Croatian female alpinists start ‘Everest 2009´ expedition

24 March 2009

Description:

Eleven Croatian female Alpinists and their guide Darko Berljak will begin their "Everest 2009" expedition today (Tues).
They will try to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world (8,848 metres).
The Croatian Mountaineering Association has organised the expedition.
The women have been preparing for almost two years for this year's adventure. Although they had no luck with sponsors, they succeeded on their own with the support of their cities and counties in collecting 25,000 US dollars apiece, the minimum needed for such an expedition.
If they succeed, they will be the first Croatian women to have reached the summit of Mt. Everest They are planning to return to Croatia on 3 June.
In 2007, Croatian women reached the summit of Cho Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world (8,201 metres), 20 kilometres west of Mount Everest on the border between China and Nepal.
