Croatia and Albania became full members of NATO yesterday (Weds) by depositing instruments of accession at the Department of State in Washington, D.C.Croatian ambassador to the USA Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic gave the instruments of accession to the North Atlantic Treaty, for which the United States is the government of deposit, to Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg.
The United States welcomed the end of the accession process before the NATO summit in Strasbourg and Kiel on 3 and 4 April that will celebrate NATO's 60th anniversary.
NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer congratulated Croatia and Albania on their admission to NATO.
In an interview on Croatian National Television (HRT), Scheffer said Croatia had already proved itself an exporter of security rather than just a consumer. He praised Croatian involvement in ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) missions in Afghanistan, the most important NATO operation.
