Split is to have a new top end hotel with Hilton Corporation saying that they have entered an agreement with Croatian firm to renovate a site on the waterfront.Scheduled to open until the end of 2009, the full service hotel will become the company's second property in Croatia, joining the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik, which opened in 2005.
Situated directly on a prime waterfront location, near the city's historic centre, the 314-rooms Hilton Marjan Split, formerly known as the Hotel Marjan is currently undergoing an extensive refurbishment programme.
The investment is worth almost one billion kunas or 135 million Euros and the renewed hotel should employ around 400 workers.
The Croatian firm Adriatic's managing director Zeljko Kerum said he is confident the alliance will be a huge success. Kerum added the hotel Marjan is his biggest and the most important project.
Ulrich Widmer, Development Central & Eastern Europe, Hilton Vice President expressed his content with the fact the world brand had arrived in Split.
Croatian Minister of tourism Damir Bajs who also attended the ceremonial signing of and agreement on Thursday said he believed the hotel had a great significance for Croatian tourism.
The Hotel Marjan was built in 1963 and many famous persons where its guests such as Sophia Loren, Orson Welles and Prince Albert II of Monaco.
