British WWII veterans return to Vis

21 May 2009

Description:

Aging British WWII veterans refuse to forget their fallen co-fighters even 65 years after the end of the war.

A group of war veterans is set to visit the remote Adriatic island of Vis in Croatia on May 19th to commemorate those who died in battle in 1944. The British ambassador to Croatia, David Blunt, is to join the veterans on a two-day visit.

Many British war veterans are getting to old to travel, but the stalwarts still keep coming, even though some are in their 90s.

Some 6,000 British troops took part in the British war base conflict on the island of Vis in 1943 and 1944, where an airport served many operations. There is also a British graveyard on the island to commemorate the dead.
