Croatia to introduce biometric passports

22 May 2009

Description:

The Croatian government approved and sent to Parliament a bill on the introduction of new biometric passports from 1 January 2010 yesterday (Thurs).
The new passports will comply with EU security standards.
A biometric passport is a combined paper and electronic identity document that uses biometrics to authenticate the identity of travellers.
The standardised biometrics used for this type of identification system are facial and fingerprint recognition and personal identification numbers.
The passports, valid for ten years, may be obtained at any police station.
Croatian MPs and other senior officials who have diplomatic passports will have biometric characteristics in them from 1 July 2009.
