Description:
A British historian is claiming King Arthur was buried in Croatia.Historian John Matthews has told the Croatian daily newspaper Jutarnji List he believes the gravestone found in the southern Croatian village of Podstrana is really King Arthur's.
"If proven true, this theory will cause huge discontent in the UK. When we were working on Jerry Bruckheimer's movie about King Arthur, many Brits called me a thief. They accused me of trying to steal King Arthur from the UK. There is no doubt it would be useful to do proper archaeological research in Croatia's southern province of Dalmatia. Who knows what we would find," Matthews has said.
Croatian authorities have already removed the gravestone found in the village of Podstrana along the coastal road between Adriatic cities Split and Dubrovnik. The authorities plan to protect the gravestone and place a copy of it where it was found.
Matthews and a few Croatian historians believe King Arthur was actually Roman commander Lucius Artorius Castus, who may have been buried in Podstrana.
