Description:
All shops may open on Sundays from 1 June to 1 October, according to the new Croatian Sunday-shopping law.The first Sunday shopping yesterday (Sun) in five months attracted numerous customers to shops, but merchants were dissatisfied because the shops could remain open only until 2pm and customers usually arrived after 4 pm.
Their employees are also dissatisfied but are keeping quiet for fear of losing jobs at a time of recession.
Merchants have claimed they have already had to dismiss 2,800 employees because of mandatory Sunday closures during the past months.
The Croatian Employers Association (HUP) has called for Sunday shopping in Croatia, a tourism country.
The unions are warning that many employers will continue to refuse to pay overtime for Sunday work or to give workers an extra day off in compensation for it.
