Description:
Croatian Minister of Health Darko Milinovic has dismissed media speculation about amendment of the anti-smoking law or postponement of its enforcement.Milinovic did so during his meeting yesterday (Tues) with Croatian Employers Association (HUP) members.
He said: "The government would be very foolish to make concessions only one month after a new law had entered into force. We will see after six to nine months how much impact the law has really had on bars and restaurants. We can talk about it in the autumn."
Milinovic added it was not true that Croatian restaurants had suffered an 80-per-cent drop in customer numbers since the new anti-smoking law entered into force in May.
The minister said: "Around 30 per cent of Croats are smokers and the other 70 per cent are non-smokers. I want to protect non-smokers and will not agree to any changes in the law that endanger them."
The minister noted smoking killed some 15,000 Croats annually and recommended that restaurant proprietors find ways to attract more guests, such as lower prices.
