Croatia to appoint woman PM?

Croatia may be about to appoint its first female prime minister after the president, Stipe Mesic, remarked on national radio earlier that he would name Jadranka Kosor as prime minister-designate once she proves that she has a majority in the 153-seat parliament - the HDZ says she already has the backing of 83 deputies within the governing coalition that it heads up.

Kosor, aged 56 and previously a journalist looks set to take over from Ivo Sanader, prime minister since 2003, after he made a shock announcement of his resignation from the post, and politics altogether, on Wednesaday this week. Croatia has been in confusion as to why since his statement since no specific reasons for the resignation have been given.

The Jutarnji List newspaper said that "The decision is scandalously unserious and irresponsible, notably since it was not explained at all,". Speculation for the move has ranged from health problems, possible corruption and even that he wishes to run for presidency in the future.

Great news for womens profile in Croatia but Kosor is set to take on a block on EU accession talks due to an unresloved border dispute with Slovenia.
