Description:
Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has said the new Croatian government will survive only if it engages in radical cost-cutting.In an interview on Croatian national television (HRT), Mesic said: "What we heard in Parliament from new Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor is that the old governing programme should be modernized."
Asked whether he believed the new government had the energy for drastic cost-cutting as a means of surviving the crisis, Mesic said that was the only way out.
Asked once again about timing of Prime Minister Ivo Sanader's resignation and withdrawal from politics, Mesic said he believed such a decision had not been made overnight.
Mesic explained: "I am have been in politics long enough to have a right to believe something important caused it."
