Description:
Today, Slovenia & Croatia signed the Arbitration Agreement, that resolves a thorny border dispute in Piran bay between two countries.
"In order to one day both be members of the EU, the two countries have to know where their border is to exercise sovereignty. In 18 years they have not be able to do this, but today they are on the path to success," Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor said.
"I'm convinced that this is a good agreement for Croatia, Slovenia and the whole European Union. This is a great day for all of us. We want a solution that is a win-win-win situation for Croatia, Slovenia and the EU," Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said after the signing the deal in Stockholm.
The tribunal's ruling will be binding for both countries and will secure Slovenia's access to international shipping waters. Under the deal Slovenia commits not to block Croatia's EU accession talks again. It also agrees that the arbitration will start only after Croatia successfully concludes membership negotiations.
