Description:
The "Tara Oceans" is set to visit and make a stop in Dubrovnik later this month on the 20th November. The exploratory ship which is 36 metres long and 10 metres wide is running a worldwide scientific expedition over the next 3 years to look into and demonstrate the reality of global warming on marine life and therefore human life. The expedition started on 4th September and will explore the way in which plankton is reacting to climate change in our seas.Dubrovnik will just be one stop on this worldwide expedition which will see the ship stopping at multiples sites across the globes seas.
The Tara Oceans website says that what makes this expedition unique is the multidisciplinary and continuous exploration of the world's oceans and seas using the same collection and observation methods everywhere. An international team of oceanographers, ecologists, biologists and physicists from prestigious laboratories has been organized for the Tara Oceans expedition.
The Tara Oceans website explains that half of our CO2 production is absorbed by plankton and that their photosynthetic activity produces as much oxygen as forests - so without plankton, humans would not survive. The website says "The increase in CO2 and its acidifying effects on the oceans are at the heart of the problem. Our future is bound to the fate of the microscopic life in the oceans." The expedition will endeavour to find out how plankton will adjust to abrupt changes in the environment and through this research, hopes to educate people about the impact of global warming and what part our oceans play in the process.
