26 November 2009

Description:

Holiday spirit on the streets of Zagreb

The days are getting shorter and the leaves are changing colour…It’s a perfect setting for discovering the capital city of Croatia - Zagreb.

During the winter period there is magic in the air on the streets of Zagreb.  Whether you want to spend your time shopping or wandering around and discovering the beautiful landscape outside the city centre, it’s just magical!

A must this winter is to walk through the streets of the city centre and stop at the small wooden houses (Christmas market style) all around the centre and to try the hot wine also known as “Kuhano vino” that will keep you warm. People gather at these points every day, mingle and drink wine, eat home made sausages and enjoy the winter spirit and the pre-Christmas atmosphere of the city. The tourism board has prepared numerous musical performances on the main city square for each day during the Christmas period which will definately add to the holiday spirit!

There are numerous concerts and musical events in December. There is something for everyone, from classical music legends like Jose Careras performing in Zagreb Arena on 18th December, to “house” music icons like David Guetta performing on 17th December in “Best” discotheque. Moreover, the world’s most popular winter sport event FIS World Cup will hold the “Snow Queen” on Sljeme Mountain in January which will see some of the most popular names in ski world.

Christmas shopping is inevitabley part of the holiday spirit in Zagreb. Recently, a new shopping mall has been opened in Zagreb - the West Gate, known as the largest shopping mall in the region.  As well as that, there are numerous well known brand stores all around the city centre offering the best deals for the Christmas period. Traditionally there will be a Christmas street market in Bogoviceva Street in the city centre offering unique and artistic gifts and Christmas bits and bobs. The international “Christmas fair” on the Zagreb Fair exhibition center will be held from 18th to 30th December! Phew! Quite alot really!

Among the museums and theatre performances, spare some time to enjoy the local food specialties. Zagreb is the ideal place to enjoy some of the most fabulous gastro specialties of northern  Croatia. There are numerous restaurants offering traditional food typical for the northern part of Croatia. Do not forget to try the famous “Štrukle”!

However you decide to spend your holiday time in Zagreb you will enjoy a special warm welcome and you will discover the variety of things that this city can offer you. The experience of winter is Zagreb is something you cannot miss!!!
