Croatian Wine Symphony
As Robert Louis Stevenson once said “Wine is bottled poetry”. For wine lovers, Croatia is a new destination with the selection of wines that is worth discovering. It is unique example of a country where there is a great diversity of climate and wide range of grape sorts on a relatively small area.
While traveling through different regions of Croatia, you can try different sorts of wines, and indulge yourself in a sweet adventure of discovering new tastes and new pleasures. Considering the variety of choices, Croatian wine selection can satisfy even the most demanding wine lovers.
In the northern part of Croatia you can try Graševina (eng. Welsch Riesling - a variety that actualy has no relationship to Riesling), Chardonnay, Furmint, white and grey Pinot, Traminer, Sauvignon, and Zweigelt. In the northern parts of the country, alcohol content in wine falls and the acidity increases. In fact the dominant are the white wines with a pleasant, light and sweet flavour.
Istria and the northern part of the Croatian coast are in the forefront of top quality wine production: Malvasia, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Teran, white and gray Pinot, Chardonnay, Muscat and Žlahtina.
Furthermore, in Dalmatia, the most famous wines are: Merlot , Pošip, white Vugava, Bogdanuša (Hvar), Plavac Mali (Peljesac), Postup (which is actualy a vineyard in Peljesac but the grape variety used for this wine is Plavac Mali) and dessert wine Prošek. The most famous wine is DingaÄ, a red wine from Peljesac peninsula, a region well known for wine production.
DingaÄ is a must for every wine lover, especially when there is a rare opportunity to try it and visit the unique vineyards in Pelješac and hear the story of how this wine is produced. It has a deep ruby red color, remarkably distinctive and rich bouquet and subtly pronounced varietal aroma. It is the first Croatian top quality wine of protected geographic origin. There is nothing more spectacular than having a glass of magnificent DingaÄ wine while overlooking sunset on the beautiful Dalmatian coast. The wine is best served at 18 C combined with some of the Croatian meat specialties or best quality fresh fish.
It will awaken all your senses and you will experience something delightful, the unexpected and authentic…
