Description:
Centuries ago, Rijeka was known for its carnival more than other towns in this part of Europe. In 1982 Rijeka Carnival had its rebirth with only three groups preforming in its parade. In that time, it was not so popular, but it did not take too much time to become an International Carnival in Europe. Since then, the Carnival is held every year from 17th January to 14th February.
In 1990, 80.000 people attended the carnival parade, and in 1994 it was a real Carnival spectacle with 10.000 visitors, and around 4.000 masks. This Carnival every year begins its ritual with choosing the queen of the carnival, and giving the symbolic key of the city, to Meštaš, maestro of the carnival.
A huge number of participants and visitors made Carnival in Rijeka a member of Association of European Carnival Countries. Carnival in Rijeka is one of the best cultural events for people of all generations and interests, and it was included on the list of 500 most important events in Europe.
It is important to mention that Carnival in Rijeka is a strong tourist trump for Rijeka and, for Croatia also, in the country and abroad. Its program annually gathers more than 20.000 participants, and more than 600.000 visitors from the whole world. Occupancy of accommodation in Rijeka and other surroundings and increased consumption of catering and retail facilities in the off season have positioned Rijeka’s Carnival as the 3rd Carnival in the world. With its uniqueness, Carnival is imposed on the city and on the entire Croatia as the fifth season; season of relaxation and fun. Rijeka is the right place for everyone who wants to replace daily routine with fun, laughter and game.
Delight your selves by attending this well-know International Carnival from 17th January to 14th February, 2010.
