Croatian Wine on the Up!
Croatian wine is rarely seen outside of Croatia. But from now on you will be able to see it in... China! At least it's not far for the British to go to Croatia to get a fix of the gorgeous wines on offer there but in this latest move by the Croatian wine producers Franjo Toljanic and Mirjana Zelenika, at least the Croatian wine distribution is seeing some movement. They have agreed a long-term deal to export their wine to the Chinese market.
According to the daily Novi list, Toljanic and Zelenika are going to export their wine to the city of Gulin, and also plan to open a joint branch office there.
Toljanic said: "We believe we can do a great job in the Chinese market, and that is not just because our products are good and high in quality but also because that market has a lack of wine, especially white wine."
It has to be said that as an importing country, the UK does have a wide range of well known and popular brands for sale on every high street so perhaps the thinking behind this Chinese move makes sense... But wouldn't it be wonderful to have that holiday wine here at home?! Everyone who has sipped a Posip or two one a Croatian harbourside will be with me here... Ah well, Rome wasn't built in a day...
The Zelenika family’s Source of Life estate at Ilok in the eastern part of Croatia and the Toljanic family’s wine cellar "Gospoja" at Vrbnik on Krk Island are well-known Croatian wine producers.
Zelenika and Toljanic plan to export their wine in a limited edition. The first wines to be sent to China will be the quality dry white wine Zlahtina and sparkling wines.
To give you a quick run down, here are the wines which are to be encountered in Croatia and that you should look out for whilst in the country this summer:
Istria and the northern part of the Croatian coast are in the forefront of top quality wine production: Malvasia, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Teran, white and gray Pinot, Chardonnay, Muscat and Žlahtina.
In Dalmatia, in the south, the most famous wines are: Merlot , Pošip, white Vugava, Bogdanuša (Hvar), Plavac Mali (Peljesac), Postup (which is actualy a vineyard in Peljesac but the grape variety used for this wine is Plavac Mali) and dessert wine Prošek. The most famous wine is Dingač, a red wine from Peljesac peninsula, a region well known for wine production.
