Informal talks are to take place in Opatija in Croatia between Serbian President Boris Tadic and Croatian president, Ivo Josipovic.

 

Boris Tadic arrived in Croatia on Wednesday 24th for the talks between the countries which had not had the best of relationshps since the 1991-95 war of independance.Tadic said in a statement that they would now "discuss improving Serbo-Croatian bilateral ties". Josipovic equally stressed this aim and told AFP at the beginning of March that one of the most important objectives of his presidential programme was to improve relations between Croatia and Serbia.

 

Tadic boycotted the inauguration of Croatian president Josipovic in February because the president of Kosovo, Fatmir Sejdiu was in attendance. Kosovo is considered by Serbia to be it's Southern Provice despite having been generally accepted as independant from Serbia now by the rest of Europe. Since Croatia is one of those countries which accepts the independance, this obviously hinders relations between Serbia and Croatia.

 

Tadic also failed to attend an EU-Balkans summit which took place last Saturday in Slovenia. It was set up by Croatia and Slovenia to gather all ex-Yugoslav leaders together around a table - the first time iin 20 years. But Tadic cancelled over Kosovo's representation as an independent state.

 

It is yet to be seen if this most recent attempt can prove more fruitful...
