Croatia has seen a large growth in Japanese tourists visiting the country, according to the latest official figures.
Data from the Croatian Central Bureau of Statistics has revealed that the number of Japanese nationals visiting the Adriatic nation peaked during 2008, reaching more than 143,700,and recorded 201,300 overnight stays.
Last year, 11.26 million tourists recorded 57.1 million overnight stays in Croatia, which is a 1 and 2 percent increase in relation to 2007, the Central Bureau of Statistics announced.
A total of 9.41 million foreign tourists visited Croatia in 2008, which is 1 percent more than a year before, while they recorded a 2 percent rise in overnight stays (50.62 million).
Overall, 57 million overnight stays were made in Croatia, were the majority of these travellers being based in countries such as Slovenia, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic.
The region also proved popular among British and US tourists, with more than 260,000 and 158,000 people, respectively, choosing Croatia as their holiday destination at some point in last year.
